Animated videos
Two examples of how the characters have been used in multiple library animated videos.
In 2018 - 2019 I designed a series of characters that could be embedded across multiple Deakin University library interfaces and platforms. Some of these included: Library Design System, LibGuides (Springshare), animated videos, eLearning modules, large digital displays, social media and more.
There are 13 characters each with its own pack containing: 4 names, two different outfits, full body and in branded circles, mouths and masks in PNG and SVG files formats.
Our goal was for the characters to help foster feelings of belonging and representation in our students, with each character reflecting the diversity of our wonderful community.
Due to our understanding of the complexities of representation and our own lack of knowledge, we in-listed the help of:
Deakin Diversity and Inclusion team - helped to fill cultural gaps in our own knowledge
Cultural Diversity and LGBTIQA+ representative
Deakin University - Chair of Race Relations
Deakin Marketing team - provide Deakin branding sign-off
These teams were able to provide us with advice and knowledge that helped to individualise our character design and move away from any possible stereotyping.
Even within the restrictions of being an illustrated character – the design looked for moments of uniqueness, distinctiveness and the unexpected beyond the “typical” - tattoos, piercings, hairstyles and colouring, age differences, and eye skin combinations. The challenge is the balance between being relatable and being too stereotypical.
