Library Guide (LibGuides) redesign

Deakin University Library

Visual design lead, concept, advocacy, UI/UX, staff education and training, and ongoing design maintenance and support

In 2018 - 2019 Deakin University Library embarked on an ambitious project to redesign and uplift its Library Guides (LibGuides).

At the time there was 70 staff working in LibGuides, 120 published guides, and 55 private guides. The highest used guide had 75,000 views per year and a typical guide had 10-20,000 views per year. There were 130 Library staff members embedded in 4 faculties across 4 campuses.

The main goals of the project were:

  • To provide a solution for the complex digital ecosystem

  • Maintain consistency, quality, and brand in a devolved authorship model

  • Empower our Librarians to create at a higher digital and learning design standard

  • Uplift the entire LibGuide suite rather than just delivering improvement to individual guides

Utilising a design-thinking approach, the cross-divisional project team designed, built and implemented the successful uplift of the LibGuides. These LibGuides are now considered some of the best globally.
